AFGE’s Remarkable Response to the May 2025 St. Louis Tornado—and How Federal Injury Centers of St. Louis Is Here to Help
On May 16, 2025, a powerful tornado swept through the St. Louis area, leaving a lasting impact on our community. Thousands of homes and businesses—many in North St. Louis—were damaged or destroyed, and families were left facing tremendous challenges. In the midst of this crisis, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) stepped up in an extraordinary way, demonstrating the true meaning of solidarity and compassion.
AFGE’s Immediate Action for Tornado Victims
Within hours of the tornado’s devastation, AFGE mobilized to help federal employees and their families who were affected. The union quickly coordinated with local agencies and organizations, offering direct relief like emergency shelter, temporary housing, and financial assistance to help families get back on their feet. According to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, more than 5,000 structures were damaged or destroyed in this storm—making AFGE’s work even more critical.
AFGE’s partnership with national relief groups such as the American Red Cross made a real difference, providing everything from essential supplies to emotional support for those hardest hit (source). In a time when so many felt overwhelmed, it was inspiring to see AFGE lead the way in caring for our city’s federal workforce and their loved ones.
